“Mainframe developer” is rarely enough information to run a focused search. The same title can describe application enhancement, batch support, production troubleshooting, modernization integration, or platform-level work.

Start with the production responsibility.

State whether the professional will develop new functionality, maintain existing applications, support testing and deployment, handle L2 or L3 production issues, or participate in modernization.

Name the actual environment.

Specify the languages, data stores, scheduling tools, change-management tools, transaction systems, and business processes involved. COBOL, DB2, VSAM, JCL, CA7, and Endevor each point to different parts of the operating environment.

Define the business domain.

Payments and transaction-processing roles often require experience with settlement, clearing, funding, billing, or disputes. Domain knowledge can be as important as syntax because it affects troubleshooting, testing, and risk.

Clarify support expectations.

  • Development-only or development plus production support?
  • On-call, after-hours, or scheduled release work?
  • L2 troubleshooting or deeper platform escalation?
  • Documentation, code review, and testing responsibilities?
  • Contract, contract-to-hire, or another engagement model?
